Willis Henry Sanders (1823-1891) of Johnston County, NC, entered the University in 1840, joined the Philanthropic Society, and graduated with second honors in 1843. He was elected to the NC House of Commons in 1852 and 1858 and became a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate army.
